PujolsWhen you look at fantasy player rankings it’s clear that many people think that Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has fallen a notch. It’s remarkable that a season in which he hit .327 with 32 homers, 99 runs, and 103 RBI can been seen as stumbling in some people’s eyes. While I was a bit more reasonable in assessing his performance, I have other reasons to be concerned when it comes to Albert.

Elbow problems.

Pujols dealt with a sore right elbow last season and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that he has actually dealt with a damaged ligament in that elbow since 2003. Once again this off season he chose not to undergo surgery to repair the ligament, opting again for rest and treatment, neither of which guarantee recovery. What is particularly troublesome for fantasy owners regarding this development is that the Cards slugger is adamant that he will deal with a significantly decreased workload if the elbow barks at him again.

“If the same problem is happening this year, I don’t think I’m going to play the whole year the same way,” Pujols told the Post-Dispatch. “I sacrificed my body.”

So while I wasn’t overcompensating for what some fantasy experts viewed as a huge slide in performance last season, I’m officially driving the worry wagon. The odds of a flare-up seem only slightly less than certain, and that is not a risk I’m willing to take in the top eight pics, which is where he’s being picked in drafts over at Mock Draft Central.
