Raise the Roof

Twins parkOn a balmy 24-degree Saturday morning, how could I resist my father’s offer to take my daughter to Twins Fest to see some of her favorite players and get some cotton candy, which she informs me is the most important part of the trip.

The blue mound of sugar wasn’t my motivation. No, my desire to see the model of the new Twins ballpark was agenda item numero uno for this guy (pointing thumbs back at myself). The picture doesn’t do it justice. Heck, even the model there probably won’t do it justice by the time it’s done. Unfortunately, I’m a glass half empty guy and I found both me and my father questioning how much they’re going to regret not having a retractable roof OR even making it possible to add one in the future.

With or without Johan Santana, the Twins will be reasonably competitive in 2008 and probably more competitive by the time they open the stadium in 2010. That means potential a greater number of games into October in the next decade, which leads me to believe now it the time to stock up on stocking caps, warm jackets, and those crazy little things you snap and put in your gloves to keep your hands warm. Beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to such a significant investment, but it sure seems like someone should of raised the roof issue to a greater extent,. If you think it’s tough to get talent to want to come here and play or stay here and play, imagine when players used to warm weather climates weigh the possibility of playing in 40 degrees in October.
